Origami Bird of Paradise

Around August 2020, I consulted Ivan for active origami designer forum, hoping I can learn something there. He pointed me to Origami-Dan Discord server which is what I exactly needed. Later, he asked me if I wanted to join him designing bird of paradise. It sounds like a good learning experience, so I agreed. Each of us will come up with our own design and fold.

Origami Peacock Spider

I was inspired to design this when I watched this cute video:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HYFQQB9vqPw The spider looks funny and rather, cute.

Warped and Wrinkled Paper Curse

After starting using Carboxy Methylcellulose (CMC), I began to wonder if my setup wasn't right. The problem was my double tissue would always peel itself when drying. There will be high pitched popping sound from the paper every now and then. Finally it would be completely off the surface. Whereas on every tutorial I saw, the paper will still stick to the surface and we have to peel it off. The bad part is the paper will be warped; it's not flat. It is difficult to fold a straight line on paper like this. Imagine precreasing a grid or locating references when your fold can be bent due to the paper's bump. I have theory on why the warp happened. Before going to that, it is important to know that: When a paper is wet, it expands. When it dries, it will return to the original size. However it will keep its shape when it is wet, meaning that if it is bent when wet, it will retain that bend when dried.  When my paper dried partially, that region will shrink. This created differe...

Origami Remora

This is the fish that sticks on larger creatures, like sharks. The funny thing is the suction disc is actually a highly modified dorsal fin. Design The defining feature of this creature is of course the suction disc, along with slender body with some fins at the end. To make the suction disc, I would use a long flap and pleat it. The challenge for me was the hind section which has adipose fin (top), anal fin (bottom), and caudal fin (tail). I figured out that the anal fin can be made using a sunken sawhorse molecule: The paper that got pushed up is suitable for this fin. I can place this part near the end of diagonal and the excess paper in the corner can be used for caudal fin. For the adipose fin, I thought to somehow use the excess paper in the edge. Therefore I didn't plan it in the crease pattern. For the remainder of this post, I will omit the shaping creases shown in the picture above. Moving to the head part. I need a pair of pectoral fins near the suction disc that will ex...

Origami Palm Civet

Civet is cat-like mammal that can be found around Africa and Asia. Different species have different fur pattern. The one used is palm civet which can be found in Indonesia. All the appendage in this animal has color change: snout, ears, legs, and tail (which starts from the back). Therefore it is a good subject for color change.

Origami Leafcutter Ant

After folding Cordyceps , I had an idea to fold an ant carrying something. Then I remember there are types of ants that cut leaves and bring it back to nest. Those are called leafcutter ants.

Learning the Proper Origami Paper

One day, I attempted to fold palm civet . This animal is mostly brown, with black markings around face, back, paws, and tail. I finished the design and wanted to give it a try on real paper. To get the brown & black color, I glued two craft papers I bought from Daisho. Initially the result felt alright, it is about 70-80 gsm, and maybe I can use it to fold mammal like this.

Origami Cordyceps

Cordyceps is a type of fungi that infect living insect, control it, and eventually make the insect move to desirable place to die. Then the fungi will release its spore to complete its life cycle.

Origami Earwig

When chilling in the garden, I saw an earwig. Of all the origami that I have seen, I didn't remember seeing earwig in origami except by Brian Chan. Therefore I decided to give it a try.

Origami Indonesian Crane

Red and white on both side This is my participation on a contest by Indonesian Origami Community called " Kompetisi Origami Merah Putih " (Red and White Origami Competition). The color red and white is reference to the flag of Indonesia, as the country will have its independence day celebration on 17th August.

Origami Triangular Spider

Triangular spider is a family of spider whose abdoment has triangular (or heart) shape. Its most striking anatomical features are its predatory arms. The first two pairs of legs has spikes to capture prey. More details in  http://www.findaspider.org.au/find/spiders/182.htm .

Hello World

Introducing myself: William Gozali, an origami enthusiast from Indonesia. I always have great interest in origami. Me as a kid would pick random paper, make it square, and fold simple model like fish, duck, or crane. As school responsibilities got heavier, I stopped doing origami. One day at university's social event, my friend asked if I could do origami. As I was folding a simple model to show that person, I had flashback about the good old days of folding paper. I also remembered watching a Japanese TV show called "TV Champion", which one of the episode featured people folding crazy-complex origami like dragon. Being a computer science student at that time, I began to wonder if there is science behind it.
